'Schaak' is a kinetic sculpture that is technically quite simple but visually very strong. Sixteen small gears are positioned in a square and drive each other.
The surface of each gear is divided into four parts of which two are painted black and two white. All together the black and white quarters form a checkered pattern across the gears. As the gears rotate the pattern changes its shape constantly. The formed squares are slowly distorted and tweaked into new geometric shapes, only to be restored into neat squares a couple of seconds later.
