Alhambra
2010
40 x 40 x 170 cm
Wood, metal, electric motor, mechanical parts.

This mechanical sculpture is based on a pattern consisting of identical arrow shaped forms that intertwine perfectly. The pattern originates in Islamic culture and occurs among others at the Alhambra Palace in Spain where it is part of the plasterwork.

When in motion the mechanical construction of this piece rotates the six arrow shaped figures at different speeds and directions. This changes their position relative to each other and as a result new geometric patterns emerge. The whole appears to be chaotic at first but every now and then a neatly aligned pattern is formed. At any time the work will show a different pattern built from the same basic shapes, one more recognizable than the other.
